Can Cats Kill Snakes? What You Probably Didn’t Know

Can cats kill snakes? If you found these two engaged in a wrestling match, it would be intriguing and make you wonder which predator is at the top of the food chain.

Even though our fluffy friends don’t appear to be hunters, they hunt in the wild. But unless you reside in a snake-infested area, you are unlikely to see them going in search of snakes.

However, when a snake slithers into your house, it will automatically arouse the cat’s predatory instincts. Fluffy may find it difficult to resist the allure of a snake.

So in the fight between cats and snakes, will your cat win?

Find out by reading on.

Can Cats Sense Snakes

Our cat friends are ferocious hunters. And if you’ve ever observed your cat on a hunting trip, you may have questioned how precisely it detected a mouse nearby. And if cats can detect the presence of mice, does that imply that they can see other animals like snakes?

The good news is that our cats can detect snakes in various ways.

1. Attention to Details

Even though cats are predators, they know that there are more giant predators. As a result, they’re hyperaware and aware of everything around them when they are awake. The instincts they inherited from their feral ancestors are to take some responsibility.

2. The Smell Sense

Compared to humans, who have about 5 million smell receptors in their noses, cats have anywhere between 45 and 200 million receptors, which gives them a fantastic sense of smell.

There’s a good chance that your pet can pick up scents from up to 4–12 miles far away at any given time. The capability to smell so many different things and from such a distance helps cats detect the presence of snakes.

3. The Hearing Sense

Additionally, our feline companions have an incredible hearing! Cats can hear anything between 48 Hz and 85 kHz, whereas humans can only hear in the 20 Hz to 20 kHz range.

Our cats can hear snakes slithering through the garden much more easily thanks to this ability, which also helps them find them.

Do Cats Get Scared of Snakes?

If you frequent social media, you may have seen popular videos of cats leaping into the air in terror when their mischievous owner suddenly placed a cucumber behind them. It is strange to see a cat leap into the air when it considers a salad component. Why do cats, though, respond in this way?

Cats are instinctively hardwired to avoid snakes due to their genetic makeup. Cucumber treats trigger the cat’s fear of snakes because they resemble snakes sufficiently. When cats notice something low and life-threatening on the ground, they frequently jump up.

This inbuilt instinct to defend themselves from dangers like snake bites could be fatal. Indoor cats or cats living in colder climates are less likely to encounter a poisonous snake. However, the behavior continues to be inherent.

Do Snakes Get Scared of Cats?

Even though they have a terrible reputation for being dangerous and frightening animals, snakes can still be terrified of sly animals more oversized than themselves. A snake can be scared of various animals, and a cat will likely make a snake nervous.

Snakes will avoid cats. If the snake cannot escape, it will engage in defensive actions such as hissing, rearing up, shaking its tail, and striking. Snakes fear cats because they move swiftly, attack with teeth and claws, and are bigger than most snakes.

Who Would Win, Cat or Snake?

We must consider hunting characteristics and various mental traits, such as the capacity to fight when determining which animal will prevail in a conflict.

Cats approach their prey using a variety of hunting strategies. When they see an unknown creature going about its daily business, they will try to ambush it by crouching to remain hidden and leaping to grab their prey at the appropriate time.

In some cases, they will stalk their prey, pausing briefly as they get closer so as not to alert the unaware animal, then leaping and catching it as they are within striking distance.

Both tactics can be effective when dealing with snakes, and cats will make sure to kill the snake using their lethal claws and teeth. Cats are also ready to leap up and run away from a sudden strike if the snake attempts to retaliate, especially if they are accustomed to snakes.

Cats who have never come into contact with a snake may have more difficulty catching, killing, and—most importantly—avoiding the retaliation bite of the snake.

Despite cats’ love of hunting, not all will attempt to kill or even bother to hunt a snake. Without ever landing a fatal blow, some cats may chase after and bat at snakes as they play around with them. Therefore, even though all cats can kill snakes, not all are motivated to do so.

Final Thoughts

Most of the time, cats and snakes will endeavor to avoid each other, even though cats can kill snakes and, to some extent, keep them out of your yard. Let’s remember that we also have to protect our feline friends from snakes and take care of a snake problem on our own if it arises in our yard.

Sisi Reynolds

Hi, my name is Sisi Reynolds, and I’m 62 years old. I’m the widow of Charles Reynolds, a man who was always passionate about cats.
After he passed away 3 years ago, it fell on me to take care of his indoor cats as well as all the stray cats in our neighborhood. Through trial and error (and a lot of research), I’ve become something of an expert on cat treats!

About Me

Cats are like little children. They are part of the family and we love to give them love. So one of the best love sharing with felines is by giving them tasty treats – I even make my own at home (and I’ll share with you how).
