14 Human Foods That are Safe for Your Cat to Eat

Table of Contents

You sit on the couch to unwind and eat a delicious snack. Afterward, your cat curls around your feet and lies down, sweetly meowing as it begs for a piece of your treat. Even though you’d be happy to give a taste, you reluctantly decline because your food is unsafe for your cat.

But is that the case?

Even though sharing is caring, you must exercise extreme caution before giving your pet food. Although some foods are okay for cats, others can poison or seriously harm them.

I’ve compiled a list of human foods that are safe for your cat to eat.

What Human Foods Can Cats Eat Daily

Vegetables

As obligate carnivores, cats must consume animal protein to obtain all of their nutritional needs. As a result, their digestive systems are not built to handle fruits and vegetables.

However, some vegetables, which contain minerals and vitamins that meat lacks, can be fed in moderation and occasionally.

The following vegetables are suitable for your cat.

1. Lettuce

Along with being rich in fiber, folate, vitamins A and K, and water, lettuce is indeed low in fat and a great source of fluid for cats who don’t get enough from other sources.

2. Spinach

If you’ve ever noticed your cat nibbling on the grass, you know cats enjoy leafy greens. Although spinach is a good source of vitamins, cats with kidney or urological issues shouldn’t consume it.

3. Carrots

The beta carotene found in carrots is fantastic for your cat’s eyes and coat. As long as it is cooked and peeled to lower the risk of choking, you can safely give your pet this orange vegetable.

4. Celery

Celery is an excellent food for cats with digestive problems because it is high in vitamins and fiber.

This crunchy vegetable can help your pet’s kidney function and has diuretic properties. Additionally, it contains a lot of water, making it suitable for a snack or treat for overweight cats on controlled diets

Fruits

Most fruits are edible to cats, but only in low quantities. This is because fruits have a lot of sugar and, if given in large amounts, they could make your cat obese and can result in diabetes.

Some of the fruits cats can eat include:

5. Watermelon

Since watermelon is more than 90% water and includes vitamins A, B, C, and potassium, it helps maintain the proper water balance in your pet’s body. Cantaloupe and honeydew are other varieties of melon that cats can safely eat.

You can give them small amounts of food if you remove the outer, tough skin and the seeds.

6. Bananas

Bananas have health benefits for people of all ages. They can also be a nutritious treat for cats, but because of their high sugar content, they should only be given as a special treat.

7. Strawberries

Strawberries can be eaten raw, frozen, or pureed by cats. A small serving of these delicious red fruits, which are high in fiber, potassium, and vitamin C, can help your cat’s immune system.

8. Pumpkin

Pumpkin is safe for cats if the outer layer and seeds are removed. In actuality, incorporating two or three spoonfuls of cooked pumpkin puree into your cat’s food can aid in the relief of constipation and diarrhea issues.

Grains and Cereals

Like fruits and vegetables, cats’ diets don’t require carbohydrates. However, when it comes to vitamins, fiber, and iron, whole grains that haven’t been refined and wheat cereals can benefit them.

These are the grain and cereal foods that cats can eat.

9. Rice

White rice is safe for cats to eat in small amounts, even though it is not necessary for their diet. If it’s experiencing digestive problems, it might be beneficial.

10. Oatmeal

Oats are rich in protein, iron, and fiber, all of which are good for the general health of your cat. They can also be applied topically for skin issues.

Animal Products

What human foods do cats like the most? This question has an easy solution. Simply put, cats are carnivores. They must consume meat protein for a strong heart, clear eyesight, and healthy reproductive functions.

Below is a list of animal foods cats can eat.

11. Fish

Although it’s best to prevent your cat from consuming fish from the aquarium, giving him oily fish like tuna or mackerel can benefit his eyes, joints, and brain.

12. Hams and Bacon

Because they contain significant amounts of salt and fat, this kind of meat can be offered sparingly and occasionally as a treat. Ensure that they are thoroughly cooked and chopped into bite-sized pieces.

13. Eggs

As long as they are cooked, eggs are a great source of protein that cats can safely eat (scrambled or boiled). Never feed your cat uncooked eggs because they may contain bacteria and viruses like Salmonella and E. coli.

14. Meat

Your little carnivore naturally prefers poultry, beef, and other meats. Your best option is cooked poultry. Avoid meats with a lot of sodium, like ham or cold cuts, because excessive salt can poison cats.

Final Thought

It’s important to note that even though your cat might want a piece of your meal, it has no idea what is safe and what isn’t.

Remember that as part of a balanced diet, all of these human foods cats can eat should be given occasional treats. If you have any questions about what your cat should or shouldn’t be eating, consult your veterinarian about the healthy food to feed them daily.

Sisi Reynolds

Hi, my name is Sisi Reynolds, and I’m 62 years old. I’m the widow of Charles Reynolds, a man who was always passionate about cats.
After he passed away 3 years ago, it fell on me to take care of his indoor cats as well as all the stray cats in our neighborhood. Through trial and error (and a lot of research), I’ve become something of an expert on cat treats!

About Me

Cats are like little children. They are part of the family and we love to give them love. So one of the best love sharing with felines is by giving them tasty treats – I even make my own at home (and I’ll share with you how).
